In April 1945, as Jewish prisoners on a death march from Hungary reach an abandoned barn near an Austrian village, their SS guards vanish, leaving them starving, freezing and helpless while villagers remain divided over their fate. Desperate for food and hope, a former Budapest opera singer among them devises a plan: with fellow inmates and willing villagers, they stage Johann Strauss’s “Wiener Blut” in the barn to earn the means to survive.

Late fall 1947: The inhabitants of Frauenburg, a US garrison town, are facing another harsh post-war winter. But a social sensation causes a stir: Freya Sonnenberg, one of the three daughters of the former mayor, is to marry the American base commander Bellmont. Each of the sisters has her own hopes for this event: For Freya, the wedding is the start of a carefree and prosperous life after the war. For the older sister Nora, it means belated satisfaction for the early death of her beloved father. And Gudrun, the youngest, is looking forward to an uninhibited sex life. But one evening before the wedding, a blackmailer threatens to destroy the sisters' plans. Compromising details from Freya's time in the army emerge. Was she really the playmate of a prominent Nazi bigwig...?

Best friends Dana and Julia drink alcopops in Julia's mum's car, while the boys hang out on a park bench smoking weed. It's time to leave for the party and Julia discovers she has more than a carful, so the boys volunteer to get in the boot. When Dana refuses drive Julia takes the keys, and their fun night out takes a tragic turn. Mixing drama and gross-out comedy, BOOT shows how a good time can inexorably slide into tragedy; how sacrifice can seem like a betrayal; and how guilt is the heaviest burden to bear.
